HOW TO GROW
Sowing: Start the Zanzibar Castor Bean seeds indoors, planting 1" deep in individual pots; place in a sunny location and keep lightly moist until germination, which should occur within 2-3 weeks. Since the seedlings grow quickly, transplanting to a larger pot may be necessary to prevent them from becoming root bound. Plant them outdoors as soon as the soil has warmed and there is no chance of frost. These Ricinus Zanzibariensis seeds can also be planted directly outdoors but need rather high soil temperatures in order to germinate. The optimum temperature for germination is 75 degrees F. Keep in mind that these Zanzibar Castor Bean seeds are highly poisonous and should be handled with extreme care.
Growing: Water seedlings regularly until they become established. This plant grows very quickly and needs little care, though it grows best in rich soil and may need occasional fertilization. The growing stems can be pinched back to encourage bushier growth. Mature plants tolerate drought and flourish in slightly dry soil, though they prefer moisture and will benefit from occasional watering in dry weather. The Ricinus Zanzibariensis plant does not like cold weather, and grows poorly in temperatures below 50 degrees F.
Harvesting: For cut flowers, choose stems with flowers that have just opened. Strip the foliage that will fall below the water level, and place in water immediately.
Seed Saving: At the end of the season, the pods will begin to turn brown; remove them and spread them out in a dry location. Since they may burst open and expel their seeds, a light cover may be needed. Separate the Zanzibar Castor Bean seeds from the pods and store them in a dry place for 2-3 years.
